Sept 18

Again

I’ve begun doing it
again
bringing a book
to the bar
reading snatches
and bits
when left alone for a few
moments
leaving the phone
in my
pocket
unchecked with its notifications
of emails
likes
comments
suggestions
mounting
growing feverishly
and wondering at their
abandonment.

I’ve begun doing it
again
building up that space
between me and
the world
stepping into the pages
instead
of checking what
lies the president said
today
who won the
game
where the latest school shooting
happened
and how many
died.

I will check all
that
later
but no matter
the state of the world
that space
needs
to be
taken
preserved
built-up
maintained in order
to have the strength
to fight
and care
and fix
the mess of things we’ve made
to contribute
in whatever way we
will contribute

so I’ve begun doing it
again
and if you see me doing it
don’t say hello
don’t even buy me
a drink
maintain your
space
sip your own
drink
and then later
we’ll talk
we’ll catch
the killers
lock up the president
and maybe
just maybe
jump for joy
cheer
cry out
when our team
nets a last minute
goal
against the odds
to tie a game
that seemed surely
lost.
