My Left Sock

The room is stifling
and filled with the sound
of urine hitting tepid water.

My left sock has turned heel up.
The fibers are transparent
from overuse like the treads
worn through my emotions.

The pearly polish, now chipped
and riding high on the nail,
barely shines in the light . . .

I can no longer
the history
of physics.
