Kid Sinister

You were a manic, frantic polyglot.
A sure shot in the parking lot.
Making sure the cops were not within
ear-shot as the deals went down.

You were a hundred-watt bulb in a
forty-watt socket.
You were the vapor trail fading from a hastily-launched rocket.
An alchemical explosion when lava meets the ocean and
that bigger than life sizzle going skyward.

We loved your unhinged ways,
The smoke you caused and those sudden flames.
The passionate action of earlier days when you held a match
to the stick of dynamite that threatened to blow us all away forever.

Nowhere and Capitalism

Distributing participation medals
Is a protest
Against
Capitalism. Evaluating participation
Via price
Creates value
Through the scheme of competition.

Bubbles wading through water
Complicates this notion-

Air pockets
Gliding over
Like water striders tiptoeing across the Dead Sea

Motions the progress of momentary
Awe-

As bubble spurts
Initiate spontaneous death
It’s reasonable to consider
Their value
As
Both immense and minuscule.

Moment of awe duplicated en-masse
Special in its seconds long inhale and burst
But common
As the ripples
Guiding its essence
To shore.
What distinguishes the middle ground
From its direction
Is the sustainability
Of having nowhere to go
And claiming
To have been there before.

Frozen Charlotte

Skin, blue,
like mistletoe berries
under her midnight sun, she
sways and hums
to the tune of fireflies
in flight
and whispers upon the wind
though bare branches.
Night’s chill rests, warm,
upon bare shoulders
in want of cover, but
the anima
and blood
are numb to Winter’s sting.
So, she dances,
the wreath of Spring,
long fallen away,
beyond the crystalline grasp
of icy fingertips
(or loving hands).
Falling
silent and still—
a night heron frozen, midflight—
she turns, slowly,
to me
and the offending glow
of yellow lamplight
on bedroom walls (reflected in my eyes),
until thoughts pull her
away
in cold procession
back
into the taciturn embrace of
Night’s song
and that baleful moon, above.
So,
she dances,
unknowing (uncaring)
that she’ll be alone
for the next thaw.
