The Empress
she’s a spinning needle
in the emerald lake
her belly a medallion
to the sun, an exaltation
of larks, fair her fingers
tattoo of the water
her face a dream for
lancelot and ivy bower
under her a cool current
rocks a celtic lullaby
above her a keening wail:
the bagpipe sun bleeds
through the veil of her
eyes in a patchwork red
on the bank an old tree
pulls up her skirt, leans
over roses, her hair a splay
of fern, her skin a moss
a wreath of tiny stars
her throne a winding branch:
the lady of the lake
and all the beasts
